Have a Punkly Dunkly Xmas

I insist… this isn’t a Christmas EP. I swear! Well, maybe except for two songs…

It’s been debatable whether or not “Taking Down Christmas (Not a Christmas Song)” from “Whining and Pining” and “My Christmas Eve (Also Not a Christmas Song)” from “Opening Act” are Christmas songs, just because they have Christmas in their respective titles and have some Christmas-themed sentiments (metaphorically speaking) throughout. But, metaphors, they are solely intended to be.

Though Christmas is my third favorite Holiday (subsidiary to my ultimate favorite, Thanksgiving!), and while it is a season of joy with countless Christmas songs and albums of the same classics by numerous artists cluttering up the airwaves, I contend with intense conviction that I have only written TWO Christmas songs, original ones at that in “What Christmas Means to Me” and “All Wrapped Up“.

But who am I to deny people their opinion when it comes to art? In the end, my works become art when people subject themselves to their personal interpretation, how my music makes them feel, and what it indicates to them. I pride myself on allowing that, which is why you don’t see descriptions and explanations of my song lyrics and why I dodge questions like “What is this song about?” or “What did you mean when you said ____?”

There is a difference between personal interpretation and “taking it personally” when it comes to such matters. Songs are songs and shouldn’t matter what they mean to the songwriter, but to those who ultimately hear and hopefully enjoy them. As signaled by my song “Figure-figure Figuring” on “Whining and Pining” in the lyric “stop forcefeeding me all the words in your head, such heart-bleeding words I never would have said.

That stated, who am I (in reverse) to say if two of these songs are Christmas songs or not? There are Christmas songs these days about everything, and many are anything but “traditional” classics. And while more and more emerging artists cover the traditional hits each year, a steadily increasing plethora of new song concepts has emerged of late.

In that spirit and in my love that these are four ORIGINALS mentioning Christmas, I merrily, if ironically, present the “Christmas” EP I’ve entitled “Have a Punkly, Dunkly Christmas” containing two songs I consider a true Christmas sentiment and two that are in contention as to whether they do as well and whose status as a genre I will leave up to the listener. It’s up to you!
