I Insist… This Isn’t A Christmas EP. I swear. … Well,… except for One Song!
It’s been debatable whether or not “Taking Down Christmas (Not a Christmas Song)” from “Whining and Pining” and “My Christmas Eve (Also Not a Christmas Song)” from “First Prize Idiot” are Christmas songs, just because they have Christmas in their respective titles and have some Christmas-themed sentiments (metaphorically speaking) throughout. But metaphors they are solely intended to be.
Though Christmas is my second or third favorite Holiday (subsidiary to my ultimate favorite, Thanksgiving!), and while it is a season of joy with countless Christmas songs and albums of the same classics by numerous artists cluttering up the airwaves, I contend with extreme conviction that I have only written ONE Christmas song, and an original one at that in “What Christmas Means to Me” (despite its title being identical to a classic).
But, who am I to deny people their opinion when it comes to art? In the end, my works become art when people subject them to personal interpretation, how my music makes them feel and what it indicates to them. I pride myself on allowing that, which is why you don’t see descriptions and explanations of my song lyrics and why I dodge questions about “What is this song about?” or “What did you mean when you said ____?”
In that spirit and in my love that these are three ORIGINALS mentioning Christmas, I merrily, if ironically, present the “Christmas” EP I’ve entitled “Have a Punkly, Dunkly Christmas” containing one song I consider a true Christmas sentiment and two that are in contention as to whether they do as well!

What Christmas Means to Me
Oh, I love the snow, and the lights
and the Christmas trees
Going to holiday parties
and eating as much as I please
I love shopping and dropping in
to see so many good friends
And I pray that this holiday season
won’t come to an end
And it may seem, this is Christmas
Not exactly what it means to me…
So we’ll raise a toast
to our Christmas host
and decide to be
as good as we can be
And when we forget our vow,
Christmas comes back around
that’s what Christmas means to me
Some say Christmas is all about
Santa and his little elves
but it’s more of a time that
brings out the best in ourselves
sugar plums dancing and
reindeer are prancing around
while carols and sleigh bells
and so many holiday sounds,
make it all seem, this is Christmas
Not exactly what it means to me…
So we’ll raise a toast
to our Christmas host
and decide to be
as good as we can be
And when we forget our vow,
Christmas comes back around
that’s what Christmas means to me
Oh silent, night, oh, holy night
won’t you gather us one more time?
Christmas star shine bright
this Christmas night
inspire us to do what is right…
I will drink egg nog
and spread all of this Christmas cheer
(hey, hey, hey)
but no promises on
what I’ll do for the rest of the year,
And, when decorations and
Christmas reminders are gone,
(holiday)
soon Christmas reminds us
that it will be coming along
and from what I see, that is Christmas
it’s exactly what it means to me…
So we’ll raise a toast
to our Christmas host
and decide to be
as good as we can be
And when we forget our vow,
Christmas comes back around
that’s what Christmas means to me

Taking Down Christmas
(Not a Christmas song!)
The lights shine bright but never fade
but just shut off the second they
experience depression we go through
the second we bring to an end
the many days and weeks we spend
to celebrate our season, me and you
Little did I know or comprehend
we were coming to our season’s end,
You don’t know how I wish I knew…
that I would freaking miss us,
like when I take down Christmas
December twenty-six crushed
my spirit as I pack it all away
Should it hurt this much,
worse than taking down Christmas?
Will take me the next six months
to pack away our lifelong Holiday
that took me down
Until next Christmas comes around,
maybe, by then, I might rebound
Packing boxes I consolidate
memories that I un-decorate
these festive walls that I have clung onto
Just like I wish I could suspend
a season that comes to an end
Avoid the fateful day it’s building to
How high we go only to be let down
packing in the attic safe and sound,
surprised that in just one short day…
that I would freaking miss us,
like when I take down Christmas
December twenty-six crushed
my spirit as I pack it all away
Should it hurt this much,
worse than taking down Christmas?
Will take me the next six months
to pack away our lifelong Holiday
that took me down
Until next Christmas comes around,
maybe, by then, I might rebound
Fa-lah, fa-fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah, fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah, fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah-lah-lah-lah!
Fa-lah, fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah, fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah, fa-lah-lah-lah,
fa-lah-lah-lah-lah!
and I still freaking miss us,
like when I take down Christmas
December twenty-six crushed
my spirit as I pack it all away
Should it hurt this much,
worse than taking down Christmas?
Will take me the next six months
to pack away our lifelong Holiday
that took me down
Until next Christmas comes around,
maybe, by then, I might rebound!

My Christmas Eve
(also not a Christmas song!)
There’s a certain night of year, when
I’m reminded from all the warmth and cheer
of all the precious gifts I get from you
Yet, all year round I still celebrate
With all you’ve given, I wanna concentrate
on every way that I can give back too
You shine like a tree-top star
that guides me to where you are tonight,
draws me close when you are far from me
You twinkle, you’re shiny bright
and, I’m this kid lookin’ at all the pretty lights
Of all my favorite days, you’re my Christmas Eve
Just like my favorite time of year,
counting down with that big night drawing near,
with all this suspense building you just can’t take,
anticipation that you’ll be here
exciting joy that fills my atmosphere
feeling deep inside, I just can’t wait…
You shine like a tree-top star
that guides me to where you are tonight,
draws me close when you are far from me
You twinkle, you’re shiny bright
and, I’m this kid lookin’ at all the pretty lights
Of all my favorite days, you’re my Christmas Eve
Christmas lights flash off and on,
but you keep shining all year long,
and every day I’m celebrating you…
You shine like a tree-top star
that guides me to where you are tonight,
draws me close when you are far from me
You twinkle, you’re shiny bright
and, I’m this kid lookin’ at all the pretty lights
Of all my favorite days, you’re my Christmas Eve
Oh, shine like a gleaming star
guide me to where you are tonight
Draw me close if you’re too far from me
Sparkle so shiny bright,
I’ll spy the glitter of your twinkling light
You’re my favorite day, my Christmas Eve…
